Hoover Dam Monument Plaza (in progress)
crew.jpg

Description: Monument Plaza was built in 1936-37 by world-renown Oscar Hansen, The project failed and had to be repaired in 1958. The 1958 restoration of the plaza, again failed to rectify the underlying problems causing rapid distress. The scope of work involved investigative analysis in determining the underlying conditions causing rapid deterioration. It was determined that the lack of water runoff, coupled with no means of drainage for water that penetrates the terrazzo, and lack of adequate expansion joints for the terrazzo, which was essentially boxed in on all four sides, each contributed to the prior failures. The work involved giving the plaza a proper slope in which to remove surface water, coupled with an underlying drainage mat and under-slab drainage system. All existing terrazzo was removed, and all brass elements were cataloged and replaced in their original 1936 positions with existing or newly reproduced brass elements. The diorite was re-set and repaired, and the statues have been completely refurbished.

The scope of this project included repair or replacement of all exterior siding, post and beam structure, installation of structural turnbuckle assemblies while removing and replacing all perimeter sill beams under the barn that were not over the creek, which contains protected Steelhead Salmon and Red Legged Frogs. The barn also had to be lifted and leveled to meet ADA standards without actually working in or touching the creek bed itself, which spanned 55 feet of the structure.

Description: In this project we restored the featured adobe building using historical methods to remove and remake original, damaged adobe bricks, designed and built a new log hip roof to sit inside of the support structure (not atop the walls) including new bond beam, ceiling rafters and original loft areas, reroofed with fire treated cedar shakes, and installed a new structural support system consisting of embedded anchors and specially made brackets. We then primed and painted newly installed trim, raised the ground to divert water away from the structure, built a new ADA access ramp, rebuilt the fireplace to original standards, and installed a new electrical system.

This project also involved making the structure watertight and tying the existing structure to the new framing to prevent collapse during seasonal wind events.
